===== Forwarding UMN Gmail to Physics =====

First please note that gmail is the official university email system, and as such receives a much higher support level than the "best effort" Physics system.

Having said that, for anyone who wants to forward umn.edu email to Physics....

  - Log in to your umn gmail account: http://mail.umn.edu
  - Click the "cog" icon at top-right of the page. A menu will appear, select "Mail Settings"
  - Select the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab
  - Click the "Add a Forwarding Address" button
  - Enter your physics email address and click "ok"
  - Select the 'Forward a copy of incoming mail to...' option and select your forwarding address from the drop-down menu.
  - Select the action you'd like your messages to take from the drop-down menu. You can choose to keep Gmail's copy of the message in your inbox, or you can send it automatically to All Mail or Trash.
  - Click Save Changes.

What follows are some **outdated** instructions on how to tell Google to also forward spam - many people requested this, to avoid having to check the gmail spam folder, but changes made to the UMN mail service during January 2016 causes issues with this approach - namely that any forwarded spam which is then rejected by the physics system causes the umn system to send //you// a delivery failure message. We regard this as a poor configuration choice by umn, but are unable to change the behavior.

We now recommend **not to forward spam** from gmail, and instead periodically check your gmail spam folder to make sure nothing is incorrectly categorized.  **If you have the filter below defined, please delete it**

Next, you can optionally set up so that gmail does not put anything into the Spam Folder, and instead forwards on "spam" messages to the address that was set up above.

This is only useful if you don't want to trust gmail's spam detection, or to periodically check your gmail "Spam" folder.

  - First, go into your gmail settings.

  - Next, click 'Filters'
  - Click 'Create a new filter'
  - Set it up as follows:
      - Fill the box as follows:
        - {{:computing:accounts:email:spamfilter1.png|}}
      - Then click "Create Filter with this Search"
      - A warning will pop up, click 'Ok'
      - Check the box next to "Never send it to Spam"
      - Click "Create Filter"
  - Now you can log out and all mail will be forwarded
